Over the past twenty years of using sand tray in play therapy with my clients and teaching play therapists how to get really grounded using sand tray therapy with their clients, here are questions I’m ALWAYS asked by play therapists.
- How do I introduce the sand tray and then how do I process it with my clients in a way that helps them really benefit from sand tray?
- How do I make sense of what my clients do in the sand tray? I have no idea what any of it means. I feel lost and inept (and quite frankly – like a fraud).
- What do I say to my clients when we talk about their sand tray?
- What kind of sand tray should I get? What kind of sand should I get? Do I really need all those miniatures? It’s so expensive!
- How do I document my clients’ sessions when they use the sand tray?
These are excellent questions because if you don’t know how to effectively use this projective modality, you won’t likely get the most benefit for your clients in the play therapy process.
You may actually even create more problems if you don’t know how to use this powerful, projective modality properly.

What you can expect ...
During this two-day, in-person, experiential sand tray training, you’ll learn:
- The foundational history and elements of sand tray therapy.
- What to say to clients to introduce the sand tray, how to process your clients’ sand trays safely and therapeutically, and how to end the sand tray session
- What to look for in the sand tray to recognize clinically relevant themes so you can understand what’s going on in your client’s sand tray. You’ll be able to use the information about themes to understand what your clients are working to resolve and how you can empower them to resolve it.

Course Description:
Integrating play therapy and sand tray in the treatment process for children and adolescents helps them resolve their mental health challenges in a way that meets their unique developmental needs in treatment. This in-person, experiential training will help child/adolescent mental health professionals and play therapists understand the developmental aspects of working with children and adolescents using sand tray in play therapy treatment. Participants will learn how to identify clinically relevant themes, how to process sand trays with clients, and how to therapeutically “hold” client sand trays in play therapy. Participants will also gain practical tips for how to document their play therapy sessions when using sand tray. Through this in-person two-day didactic and experiential training, participants will create and process their own sand trays and recognize how the therapeutic powers of play are accessed in the play therapy process.
Objectives for this training:
- Participants and play therapists will identify the unique developmental aspects of using sand tray in play therapy with children and adolescents.
- Participants and play therapists will describe the concept of “energy spots” in client sand trays in the play therapy process.
- Participants and play therapists will describe at least two therapeutic powers of play accessed using sand tray in play therapy.
- Participants and play therapists will demonstrate how to effectively introduce the sand tray process in play therapy to children and adolescents.
- Participants and play therapists will demonstrate the ability to identify personal projections and therapeutically hold client sand trays.
- Participants and play therapists will explain basic concepts of Jungian theory and how to integrate sand tray with other play therapy models.
- Participants and play therapists will explain minimal information to include in session progress notes for sand tray in play therapy sessionsList item two.
For mental health professionals pursuing a Registered Play Therapy (RPT) credential, this training fits into Category 3: Play Therapy Skills and Methods.
Here’s my rationale: the seminal and historically significant theories underlying this training are Humanistic and Ecosystemic/Prescriptive Play Therapy. Humanistic play therapy because the use of the therapeutic relationship is critical for the change process. Ecosystemic/Prescriptive play therapy models provide a framework for the integration of theories to individualize the interventions used to meet the needs of individual clients. This training uses these seminal and historically significant theories as the foundation to inform the treatment process and use interventions based on the needs of each client/family within a safe, strong therapeutic relationship.
