Unlock the Healing Power of Play: Mastering Treatment Plans for Play Therapists

The ultimate guide to identifying, targeting, and resolving the core issues through purposeful and meaningful play therapy treatment plans that align with your theoretical play therapy model.

I LOVE writing treatment plans - said no play therapists ever!
At least none that I’ve met.

Over the last thirty years, I’ve heard all the frustrations and complaints about writing treatment plans.

  • ... “They’re a waste of time. They don”t matter and we only do them to please insurance companies and my agency."
  • ... “Play therapy is intuitive so I don’t need to write treatment plans.”
  • ... “I don’t know how to write treatment plans for play therapy.  They’re too hard.  It’s so pointless anyway.”

Maybe you've thought the same things and felt frustrated trying to figure out how to write treatment plans for play therapy.

If this is you, you’ve probably thought it’s a waste of time and money to focus on writing treatment plans that don’t really matter anyway.

I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL...

Documentation is rarely anyone's favorite part of the job

  • Treatment plans can be overwhelming and frustrating.
  • Most of us try hard to figure out how to get it done with the least amount of effort and time.
  • Sometimes, therapists even avoid it altogether, which can result in ethics and agency oversight problems.

So, what’s the solution? Continue to muddle through and throw something together that likely is more of a way to check off a paperwork task, but never serve as a way to get excellent play therapy treatment outcomes for your clients? Or spend endless hours trying to figure out how to write treatment plans that will actually be useful?

What if I told you there’s a way to save time and write effective play therapy treatment plans.

Hello!

I'm Cathi Spooner, LCSW, RPT-S

I’ve spent the last 30+ years in the child and adolescent mental health field.

Prior to becoming a child and adolescent therapist, I was a special education teacher for elementary-aged students. In this role, I was responsible for using assessment information to write individualized education plans (IEP) that would ensure my students accomplished their educational goals to be successful in school. I was also responsible for regularly reviewing my students’ progress to ensure they were meeting these goals.

While in college, I spent an entire semester writing IEP goals and breaking those goals down into actionable steps. I could almost write them in my sleep!

What does this have to do with play therapy and writing treatment plans? Everything.

It’s essentially the same thing - using the information gained from the assessment process to pinpoint the problems preventing success and then developing a plan to help children and their families to overcome those problems so they can thrive. That’s the goal, right? To make a difference and witness the power of healing in play therapy.

Over the last thirty years, I’ve honed my skills for creating play therapy treatment plans with clients and their parents so, together, we can accomplish their goals for overcoming the problems.

Treatment planning is more than just writing goals and objectives.

Treatment planning requires you to identify what specifically is the underlying reason your clients are experiencing problems and then working collaboratively with your clients and their parents to develop a roadmap to overcome those problems.

Whether you hate writing treatment plans, get overwhelmed by them, or both, treatment plans are necessary and can ensure you get great results in play therapy for your clients and their families.

How do you avoid paperwork burnout and frustration writing treatment plans?

The secret is learning how to complete the treatment planning process then writing treatment plans that actually work in a way that saves time while still meeting expectations for agencies, insurance companies, clients, and licensing boards.

I can teach you how to write play therapy treatment plans like a pro so you can spend more time doing what you love - helping your clients heal using the therapeutic powers of play.

"Cathi's experience and confidence in the model she developed plus her grounding energy helped in learning a whole new model. She brought it to life!"

“It was great! I love getting a more thorough framework to be able to better structure my sessions. Cathi knows SO much about neurobiology, sometimes I get lost during that part, but it is also so informative and important to know the underlying process of everything. A takeaway for me that was really important was the clinical decision making piece that I need to let parents know what to expect and what is expected of them and be very purposeful in how and when I do or don't use them.”

Play therapy provides unique challenges for play therapists writing treatment plans because the play process is often non-verbal as clients access the therapeutic powers of play. And yet, there are established best practices for mental health professionals to create treatment plans. These best practices are often written in measurable and observable terms for outcomes that will be accomplished in treatment. How do you measure outcomes for play therapy to capture that information in treatment plans?

This online course provides an overview of the purpose of treatment planning with a culturally relevant lens. You’ll learn the importance of treatment planning for the overall treatment process regarding documentation and decision-making. This online course takes you step by step through the treatment planning process to formulate a plan with your clients. You’ll learn how to use a play therapy theoretical model to develop a treatment with your clients and their guardians. Using best practices this course will show you step by step how to write treatment goals and objectives that meet the needs of your specific clients. Since the play therapy process is a dynamic process, you’ll learn the importance of period reviews to adjust your treatment focus as needed and ensure your clients get excellent play therapy outcomes.

Play therapists and mental health professionals will:

  • Participants will explain the role of treatment plans in play therapy using a culturally relevant lens
  • Participants will recite the components of a play therapy treatment plan
